Why I don't buy into the whole Black Friday thing?

Some people love a bargain, I get that. I used to be the same. I used to love buying an item of clothing at a knockdown price, whether I needed it or not.

Quite simply, Colour My Dreams is a small business that has a definite set of standards and a social conscience. • I want to support my suppliers who are also mostly small businesses. I don't expect them to discount their prices and not reap the benefits of their hard work. • Colour My Dreams is all about doing the right thing by the environment. Until we all actively change our purchasing behaviours to positively reflect how much we treasure our natural world, we will continue to put our world at risk. • I don't subscribe to the throw away society we've become. I want to create products from sustainable materials, that last a lifetime and become treasured by their owners.

It was the thrill of getting the bargain that got the happy hormones flooding around the system, making you feel satisfied and rather pleased with yourself. I've changed a lot since those days.

Black Friday is all about selling stuff really cheap. If big corporations can sell products at such low prices you have to question their supply chain negotiations and power over smaller suppliers. • Quite often, if retailers can afford to sell their products so cheaply, it may mean the people who made those products were not paid a fair price for their hard work. • A cheap price doesn't usually reflect quality. If a product is incredibly cheap, then not only is the labour not fairly rewarded, but the materials may be inferior and therefore not last very long or could even be dangerous.

Colour My Dreams only buys materials from suppliers that share the same ethical standards. • Respect for how the raw materials are grown, produced or manufactured is tantamount to ensuring that my materials are the highest quality I can find. • NO PLASTIC! I am endeavouring to ensure that all my packaging materials are compostable, recyclable and/or made from recycled materials. • My time isn't cheap, I have skills that others don't and like any craftsperson, I deserve a fair price for a quality, handmade product. I don't pay anyone to make my products, they are all made by me and I'm pretty tough on myself when it comes to quality control.

Open for Business

Life has been somewhat topsy turvy for the past few years. With Covid affecting the whole world and then my own little world being challenged with the tedium that comes with trying to sell my house and move to somewhere new; I've been feeling somewhat overwhelmed. The one constant in my life has been my yarns, hooks and needles. I honestly think they are to thank for getting me through the past four years with a semblance of sanity in tact.

If I was to rank 2022 on a scale of 1 - 10, it's a solid 5. Neither wonderful nor disastrous, in school report terms, "could do better". A new life and a new start is in reaching distance, I just have to be patient. I’ll keep doing the right things to make it happen and hopefully, before long I’ll be sharing with you my new adventure.

I Am Enough

It took a pandemic to make me realise that I am enough. Yes, the me that I am today is more than enough, I don’t need to be anything more. I discovered that I don’t need to wear make-up and wash my hair every day (yes, I used to wash it every day - how ridiculous was that) and my pared back wardrobe was more than enough too.
